Technology Allows Police To Scan 8x as Many License Plates

Currently, one beach squad car has been fitted with mounted camera's which allows software to read every license plate it passes without any additional work from the offices. With manual entry officers can check about 100 plates per day, however this new system allows them to easily check over 800.

A clean plate results in a simple beep, while a stolen car will set off an alarm.

"In our county we have highway 98 we have 231 so we have a continuous moving population. People like to come to panama city beach and to our county, so often times they will commit a crime and drop the vehicle off here," said officer Richard Moleand.

The automatic tag reader is currently on loan to the panama city beach police department. The system costs $20,000 to put in per car.
