The Bay Gets Special Attention Saturday

Updated: Sun 2:19 PM, Aug 19, 2012

St. Andrew Bay, considered a natural beauty, is among the biologically diverse estuaries in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

It is catching the attention of those who want to help preserve it.

Volunteers with the St. Andrew Bay Resource Management Association donated their time this weekend to plant march grass to help restore a portion of the coastline and prevent further erosion.

They environmentalists believe the marsh grass alternative has a higher success rate than building sea-wall barriers to combat erosion.

Project coordinator Jim Barkuloo says it’s a win/win proposition. “ It benefits small fishes and marine life and they flourish in the marsh grass. It’s very important to gather the community and we come together to learn about St. Andrew Bay and the environment around us.”
