Traffic Engineers Struggle with Traffic Congestion

PANAMA CITY-- The Bay County Traffic Engineering Division says it can control the traffic light timing for more than 130 Bay County intersections.

But they say there's only so much they can do about managing traffic on Highway 98, or Back Beach Road.

Back Beach's four lanes are designed to handle about 30,000 vehicles a day.

Engineers say about 45,000 vehicles use the roadway daily.

That number jumped to 50,000 during the July 4th weekend.

Engineers say that kind of traffic can't be handled by adjusting traffic lights.

"There's only so much with traffic signal managing when you're at a saturation point. Sometimes you just need more asphalt," Bay County Traffic Engineering Manager Keith Bryant said.
