Trial on Dothan Gambling Machines Starts Monday

DOTHAN, AL. The state attorney general's office seized 691 machines and $283,000 from Center Stage in Dothan last year. It asked Circuit Judge Michael Conway to rule without a trial that the machines are illegal slot machines rather than legal bingo. The judge denied the state's request for summary judgment Wednesday and said the case would proceed with a non-jury trial Monday.
Center Stage's operator, the Houston Economic Development Association, argued that it operated machines under rules provided by the Houston County Commission and that the attorney general's seizure was improper.
Center Stage was previously known as Country Crossing. The developer of Country Crossing, Ronnie Gilley, pleaded guilty to bribery and is in federal prison.
