Two Charged With Animal Cruelty

Two people in Walton County are behind bars charged with animal cruelty.

Walton County Sheriffs investigators say 27 year old Crystal Esquibel and 37 year old James Holzapfel III were arrested after police came across several of their horses that appeared to be in poor health.

The horses were spotted on a property off Four Mile Road in Freeport.

Investigators say the horses were taken to Alaqua Animal Refuge, but they continued to look for other animals on the property.

Four puppies and a piglet were also transported to Alaqua for treatment.

Esquibel and Holzapfel were charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty, a third degree felony charge.
