Unsung Heros Honored in DeFuniak Springs

By  |

Last month, dense smoke in this DeFuniak Springs home caused Leeann Peacock, who is pregnant, and her three small children to become disoriented. Several Walton County deputies and DeFuniak Springs firefighters arrived in minutes.

Sheriff's Sergeant James Pitman kicked in the front door: "We don't do it for the recognition. We do it to save the family and we hope they are able to reclaim their lives and save what they need from the fire."

On Monday, State Representatives Brad Drake and Marti Coley read proclamations from the Florida Legislature "thanking" the emergency responders for their efforts: "For these men who sacrificed their lives so others would be able to live theirs."

"Through the valiant efforts of these men and women they were able to save the lives of the three children and their mother."

Federal and state officials were on hand to congratulate and thank the emergency responders for their unselfish efforts. Firefighter Chad Nelson told us what goes through his mind. "Like every time I go into a burning fire, it’s smokey, hot and realizing I have to get these people out of this burning house."

Leeann Peacock and her three children are staying with relatives in Samson, Alabama while their DeFuniak Springs home is being fixed up.
