WASHINGTON COUNTY-- Washington County School District officials are proposing the county's first ever half cent sales tax to improve facilities and upgrade technology.
Other area counties have had the same tax for years, but Washington County has not. School District officials estimate the tax would raise about $800,000 a year in new revenue.
If they decide to move forward, they will ask voters to approve it for ten years. All the money will go to classroom technology.
"It just becomes an uphill battle to fund the technology that we need. Once we've taken action, then it'll be up to the citizens of washington county, but it will be an uphill battle for us from a funding standpoint to try and, because as a rural district it's very difficult for us to generate the funding we need to compete."
Board Members are planning to vote on the request next month. If they pass it, it would be up to County Commissioners to put it on the November General Election Ballot for a public vote.
