West Florida Electric Cooperatives Braces for Record Low Temperatures

GRACEVILLE, Fla. West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) is prepared for the record low temperatures expected over the next 36 hours. WFEC does not anticipate any major outages due to the extreme cold temperatures, but we are prepared to respond to them quickly should they occur. WFEC encourages its members to voluntarily limit electric usage until Wednesday, Jan. 8, due to the extremely high demand for electricity during this cold weather, especially during peak load times. Peak loads occur when the greatest demand is placed on an electric system. WFEC’s peak times are 4: 00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. during winter months.

The extremely cold temperatures will lead to a higher demand from consumers and could possibly lead to shortages in electricity supply. The cooperative doesn’t anticipate problems with meeting the high electricity demand, but voluntary reductions by its members could reduce the risk of power outages.

With the temperatures expected to drop throughout the day, PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, West Florida Electric’s generation and transmission cooperative, has notified us that tomorrow, Jan 7th they will be activating a load control event. The control event will take place from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. WFEC members participating in the H20 Plus load control program should not notice any difference in the amount of hot water available to them during this control. PowerSouth is still evaluating peak loads for Wednesday morning and will notify co-ops tomorrow if a load control is scheduled again Wednesday morning.

Members are urged to reduce their energy requirements by limiting the use of non-essential electricity and appliances during these time periods.
