A Springfield man is being charged with an open count of murder in the death of a 2-year-old child.

It happened sometime around 2:00 this morning at an apartment at 1451 Betty Lane, just off of East 15th Street and Transmitter Road.

Springfield Police responded to a 9-1-1 call about a child who had fallen, hit his head on a table and was unconscious. When officers arrived, they tried to revive the little boy. Paramedics took him to Bay Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say they noticed several bruises on the child's body and became suspicious. The boy's mother was at work. Officers questioned her boyfriend, 25-year old Robert Strudivant.

Initially they charged him with a misdemeanor count of marijuana possession. But when the Medical Examiner's autopsy revealed the boy died of blunt force trauma, authorities charged Sturdivant with murder.

He's in the Bay Bounty jail.

The case is still under investigation. Police are not releasing the child or the mother's name, until they can notify the little boy's father.
