Lynn Haven-- Dozens of people got together at a fish fry in Lynn Haven Saturday afternoon to help out a local man fighting brain cancer.
Steve Retherford is an investigator at the Bay County Sherrif's office and was diagnosed with brain cancer last year.

Friends and family are trying to raise funds to ease the burden of everyday expenses as well as medical and travel expenses.

Saturday, they held a fish fry at Sharon Sheffield Park in Lynn Haven. Fish plates included fried fish, 2 sides, dessert, and a drink.

Cold stone creamery was there, too and donated 25 percent of their sales along with other vendors donating partial proceeds to the Retherford family.

"Steve has been fighting melanoma cancer for over a year now. We are proud of that fact and we're here to raise money for the family. We've got lots of friends, family in the community that have come out and supported us in this,” said family friend, Chris Shuman.

A benefit account has been set up for Steve Retherford at Hancock bank if you would like to donate.

Lord, I pray that You, the Greatest Physician, would heal this man who has brain cancer and use this healing for your Glory. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.

It's sad that this story has become more about a donor who feels she didn't get enough attention for helping out than the brain cancer victim. And now, she's putting the spotlight on herself again, by making a bunch of posts praising herself, hiding behind different user names.

Daniel, you should be ashamed of yourself. I am a friend of Mrs. Ward's from Virginia and she did not create different user names to put the spotlight on herself. Shame on you! Most of the donors that were asked were told it would be a great way to spotlight their business as well as help a really good cause. Shame on you and the others who haven't taken time to get to know Mrs. Ward. Please tell me you are not naive enough to believe that Cold Stone and other corporations donate out of the goodness of their hearts? They get a tax break for their donations as well as free publicity. Mrs. Ward gives to many charitable organizations without any public acknowledgement. She was told that there would be public acknowledgement of all the donors this time although not the only reason she donated. She actually knows the fellow who has brain cancer and truly wanted to help. Again shame on you!

I am sorry that I don't know the gentleman who the benefit was in support of but would like to add sincere best wishes for a speedy recovery. I have had skin cancer myself and lost my Mom to colon cancer so know the devastation and expense it brings. I Will pray for support and healing for the family=)

To those who are upset at Deb: You really don't know her. She is a friend of mine and she does my hair. Those who are throwing out the gift certificates are missing out on a great stylist! You also don't know her. She is a very kindhearted person. I don't believe for one minute that the ONLY reason she donated was to promote her business.

Knowing Mrs. Ward in the way that I know her, she did not donate her services nor her time for publicity nor to drum up business. Her heart is so open and pure that she would help any person that truly needs help. She was "asked" to do this and since she knew the family she did so out of the kindness of her heart. When she was "asked" to help out, she was told that all Vendors donating would have their name on a banner and would be advertised. Did she do this for this reason? - NO but she was told it would be done. I hope it makes you feel good that you have treated this kind and generous human being in this way because I am sure she will never donate to anyone or anything again when asked in the future.

There is something wrong with everbody condemning Deb for wanting herself and other small businesses acknowledged for their participation. I think that the real moral hazzard here is that only the large business was given credit while everybody else was merely swept to the side. You should all be ashamed for what you are saying to Deb.

I don't blame her for her feelings. In my opinion all she is saying put credit where credit is due. Its unfair that only coldstone got all/most of the attention. All the other business including hers should of gotten equal coverage.

I would like to personally apoligize to those that think I donated ONLY to advertise myself. If that were the case I would not have given away services and offered to donate for each service (up to 50 services @ $5 ea)I will perform as well as giving to the raffle and anyone buying tee shirts. I too know the family and only wish Steve the best & his family. I was told by a family member it would help my business and was approached by them! I do not think that putting my name out while helping someone is such a wrong thing. I felt the news station only focused on one group giving and yes I am proud I gave. I also donate my time to breast cancer patient, and have made my services available to the battered women shelter. I have also donated to some legal immigrant workers in the area. It is my opinion that we must give back to the community and that is what I did. Other vendors were passing out their cards and promoting future sales as well. I do not know what else I can do to remedy this. Sincere aplogies to those offended. Deb

Being a personal friend of the family I am honestly disgusted by what I'm reading. The Fish Fry was to help a family in need, not advertise your business. Clearly, you donated for all the wrong reasons. I'm the 2nd winner of your $30 salon service, and will NOT be using it, nor will I give it away. I refuse to support your business, knowing that you did not donate out of the goodness of your heart, but to benefit yourself. I realize we all are trying to earn a paycheck, but you have now made it known that you care more about your business than a man who is fighting for his life who has worked in our community for years, risking his life & helping protect our community. I hope you realize how heartless you are, and that anyone else who reads your reply Mrs. Ward will also realize it.

Mrs Ward, I just wanted to let you know that I personally won a gift card for a $30 hair cut and I was actually in the process of looking for a new hairdresser. I get my hair cut and highlights every 6 to 8 weeks and due to the way you have acted I tore the gift card up and I will not be coming to you. I was going to see how you cut my hair and give you a chance to be my new hairdresser... Oh well sucks for you!!! Maybe you should learn to keep your mouth shut or if you donate something do it out of the goodness of your heart and not to benefit your pocket.
