Hundreds of runners from all over the country laced up their tennis shoes and hit the streets of Panama City Beach Saturday for the second annual “Run for Redfish”.

Running down Front Beach Road and through Pier Park, 700 people from 23 different states participated in the combined half marathon or 5k runs. And the younger ones got involved by participating in the kid fun run, a lap around Pier Park.

Organizers say they planned the event in hopes of bringing awareness to protect our unique waterways and coastlines which are the natural habitat of the redfish.

The proceeds will be donated to the Everglades Foundation.

"It's a great way to kick off December and the holiday season and do some Christmas shopping at Pier Park and get out there and exercise and have a lot of fun," said run director, Paul Wohlford.

Margaritaville played host to the Run for Redfish after party and awards ceremony.

It seems to me that if we have a Run for Redfish here in Bay County, the proceeds should go to a local environmental cause rather than Everglades Restoration.

Is anyone else confused as to why the 4th annual or 2nd annual(?) "Run for the Redfish" proceeds went to the everglades? The coastal waters and bays are the natural habitat of the red fish so why NOT send the money to another part of the state? Why don't we advertise tourism in the other parts of the state too? I know, how about we pay to advertise here in Bay county for Walton county? They sure could use the dollars over there. How about we use some BP money to advertise for vacations in Mexico while were at it? Talk about someplace that needs money...Better yet lets spend some more money(I heard $2 million) on an ICE SKATING RINK for the beach. This is not drawing people to the beach! I think someone on the county commission has a family member that owns the company that puts up ice skating rinks in stupid places. I don't know...Just wondering why the heck only 200 people showed up to vote on election day. Heck I know 200 people that would vote for me. Just wait for the next one.
