Local Wildlife Rehabilitator Dies

Handling a wild animal is dangerous to both the person and the animal. That's why wildlife rehabilitators are often far and few between. This weekend, we lost a very valued woman who gave much of her life to wildlife.

Betsy Knight, the president of the Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary in Calhoun County passed away on Friday at the age of 73.

During her career, Knight rehabilitated and released more than forty Florida black bears as well as thousands of other native animals to the wild.

Knight also used permanently injured animals that were unable to be released, to educate thousands of school children and civic groups.

Knight's daughter says she had been sick and doctors diagnosed her with the cancer the day before she passed away.

Board members of the Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary will keep Knight's dream alive by continuing to rescue and rehabilitate wild animals. They are always in need of volunteers and donations. For information on how to help, you can find the organization on Facebook.

What a terrible loss, especially for wildlife. The link to the FB page doesn't work? So glad to hear that her work will go on.
