The Bay District School Board took steps to make transportation to and from Callaway Elementary safer Tuesday.

School officials say the drop-off/pick-up area is too small and heavy traffic poses safety concerns for students.

Morning and afternoon traffic congestion on Highway 22 stretches from Tyndall Parkway to Star Avenue.

Callaway Principal, Tim Keiffer, says the issue has been a concern for several years but there hasn't been any money to expand the drop-off area.

But the school district now has half-cent sales tax revenue.
"It's a tremendous increase in the safety for our children. Having an enlarged parent drop-off and pick-up location off of Highway 22 provides parents a much safer way of getting students to and from Callaway," said Keiffer.

Construction will begin in August.
