Many Millions of Eggs Recalled

Millions of eggs have been recalled after they were linked to a salmonella outbreak that's sickened hundreds of people. The recall is massive -- 228-- million eggs.

"This recall will get Olympic gold. It is going to be large and will bring this problem to us forcefully to all of us as consumers."

One of the largest egg producers in the country -- Wright County Egg Farm in Iowa -- issued the voluntary recall this week after federal health investigators linked it to a salmonella outbreak. So far hundreds of people from California to Minnesota have fallen ill.

In most cases, people get sick with an intestinal illness for three to four days. But sometimes it can go into the blood stream. "Those people who are frail, elderly, or very young can have very serious, even life threatening infection."

While the investigation is ongoing experts say salmonella bacteria often live on the egg shells. When you crack the egg, the inside becomes contaminated. Washing your eggs won't help. The only way to get rid of the bacteria is to cook the eggs thoroughly." No soft boiled eggs, no over-easy fried, no soft scrambled.”

“If you're going to eat those eggs, cook them and then almost cook ‘em again." Better yet, return the eggs to the store for a full refund.

Brand names that are believed to be linked to the outbreak include Lucerne, Albertsons, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.

These eggs were packaged between May and August of this year.
