Adding Portable CT Scanner to ER's May Save More Stroke Patients Lives

Adding a portable CT scan to emergency rooms could increase the number of stroke patients who get life-saving treatment within the recommended time period.

Researchers studied the amount of time it took for a CT scan to be completed before and after they got a portable CT scan.

They found the time elapsed went from 34 to 15 minutes after they got the portable scanner.

Administration of the clot busting drug TPA needs to happen within three hours of a stroke occurring, but cannot be given to a patient until bleeding in the brain is ruled out.
