Hospital employees received a letter from administration explaining why a lease might be necessary for Bay Medical to survive.
Bay Medical is one of only about 8 public hospitals in Florida that do not receive any tax support, and it writes off about $30 million a year in indigent care, ranking 4th in the state for hospitals it’s size in the level of uncompensated care.
Steve Johnson, Bay Medical CEO, “There are several basic tenants that will make sure are covered in anything that we do. One, jobs for our employees, the pension plan that we've had some questions about that, those are protected, those are well funded.”
The Bay Medical Board of Trustees will have to approve. If members vote yes, public hearings are required then the County Commission will have to approve.
