Panama City- During spring break, law enforcement officials see hundreds of fake IDs turn up at bars and restaurants with under-age drinkers trying to score a buzz.
"It is a problem and it's a continuing problem. Law enforcement has got their hands full trying to put a stop to this," said Bay County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Paul Vecker.
Illegal immigrants will also purchase false documentation to appear eligible to work in the United States.
While some of these crimes may seem relatively harmless, officials say many criminals including terrorists are known to possess fake passports and IDs.
Dabbling in fraudulent paperwork can be dangerous business.
"Who really are they? Where are they from? Did they come into this country illegally?" asks Vecker.
"It poses a severe threat to our national security and public safety. Special agents with Homeland Security Investigations are involved on a daily basis in identifying, disrupting, and dismantling organizations that manufacture fraudulent IDs," said Immigration and Customs Enforcement Resident Agent Scott Springer.
Law enforcement officials say even members of the Al Qaeda terrorist group have used false documentation to mask their identity.
"We're also very concerned about people who obtain fraudulent identification and use it against us in the U.S. For example, you can find someone who would obtain a fraudulent driver's license and then go and obtain a license to transport hazardous materials which could then be used against us if they had ill intent," said Springer.
Officials are aware of the relatively easy availability of fake documentation and they’re working with other countries to crack down on fake ID manufacturers. With so many companies existing on-line, cracking down may be tough.
"As soon as we close one down, another pops up," says Vecker.
Officials say they’re always updating security features on legal IDs. Anyone in possession of a fake ID, security card, or passport can be charged with a crime on either the state or the federal level.
