Car guy Tom Voelk has driven over 100 different vehicles in 2008- just for you!
We're going to take a look back at his favorites and what car will suit you for the coming year.
2008 may have been brutal for the auto industry but there have never been so many great cars. So once again I turn my "top 10" list up to 11.
Yes, Top 11. To keep things somewhat sane I have a price cap of $75,000. And when I'm done I'll take your entree order. I recommend the duck al'orange. Let's begin in alphabetical order.
Audi a5 and s5. Athletic and full of character, it oozes sophistication inside and out. We should all be so lucky. This coupe handles both luxury and performance roles with ease.
Cadillac cuts returns. Distinctive style, dynamic performance and a well crafted cabin keep the CTS a winner. Leave this performance sedan off your test drive list and you're only cheating yourself.
Chevy Malibu is also back for a second year. In the white hot sedan market Malibu offers up what people want- handsome design, composed comfort and excellent fuel economy. All that at a reasonable price.
The perfect 70s time machine has been built and it's the dodge challenger r/t. (sound up) not only does it have excellent performance and handling, it's perfectly drawn. Challenger gets my vote for design of the year.
Ford's flex delivers on their outgoing slogan bold moves. Quiet, comfortable for 7, and loaded with tech that's easy to use, flex makes it hip to be square.
The small Honda fit is a big deal. New this year, it's frisky, frugal, and functional. Fit is clearly the most engaging car in its class. Put it on top of your test drive list.
Jaguar xf is luxury redefined. Artistic, theatrical and emotional, the xf delights everyone who comes near it. This is a car that almost seems alive (sound up) especially for the driver.
Who says families have to drive boring cars? Mazda6 has grown up in its redesign. There's room, zoom-zoom and sheet metal that looks like it was imported from Italy.
Pontiac g8. Many claim to be a budget BMW, g8 comes the closest. A true rear-drive performance machine, it's sized like a 5 series but priced below the 3. Where I come from that's called a good deal.
The new Lexus rx350. I'm kidding; this is actually the new Toyota Venza. Not only useful, it's elegant inside and out. Venza will keep families happy for the long haul.
Finally, VWS Jetta Sportswagen; German engineering that looks and feels more expensive than it is. Available with a clean diesel engine, sportwagen is fun to drive and useful to boot.
Those are my top picks for 2008. Buying a car in '09? My best advice- The market is ultra competitive theses days so test drive at least 3 different vehicles. That way you know the car that ends up in your driveway is right for you.
Got to give the tux back, going to get a late charge.
