Defuniak Springs resident Jirleane Laird lost her power last Wednesday and spends her nights outside because of the heat just waiting for the power company to change all that.
For the powerless like Jirleane, an aid station has been setup at the Walton Plaza. The Florida National Guard, Naval sea cadets, the Division of Forestry and others have come together to give residents the basic necessities; water, ice and food.
City manager Mike Standley says Ivan spared much of Defuniak Springs. Most buildings escaped heavy damage and the county has lifted most of the water boil notices.
“We fared better than most, we feel like we have a lot of damage in some areas mostly just large oak trees that fell into the street, brought power lines with them."
The county has setup another aid station at the south Walton government annex. As of Monday morning, about 5,000 people had no power.
