The middle of hurricane season is the perfect time for Girl Scouts to learn everything they need to know about being prepared for a storm. And that's what 70 local girl scouts spent their Saturday doing.

The troops spent a couple hours at the Bay County Emergency Operations Center in Southport Saturday.

They took part in various exercises, rotating stations, to learn about the history of hurricanes and the logic behind how storms are named.

They also spent some time in the incident command center, tracking tropical storm Matthew.

Eleven-year-old Katie Murphy says her favorite part was touring the 911 call center and talking about all kinds of storms.

"That tsunami's don't hit Florida even though i suggested that, that could happen, probably," said Murphy.

after completing Saturday's activities, the girl scouts will be awarded a girl scouts own badge for hurricane and storm preparedness.
