Betty Castor has been under recent attack for her involvement with the investigation of a terrorist suspect while president of the University of South Florida.
Castor did not directly discuss the ads or its allegations, but much of her presentation to the group was about terrorism in the U.S. She repeatedly mentioned the lack of federal support in Florida to maintain homeland security.
She said with a state this size, more needs to be done to ensure the safety of our citizens.
"Florida now ranks 47th of the 50 states in the funding that we receive. We also have more at risk with our long coastline and our many deep water ports, including the port here."
Castor is running against Republican candidate Mel Martinez for the Senate seat vacated by Bob Graham.
