Some local veterans will stay a little warmer and have a little more fun thanks to the Panama City Beach Rotary Club. Club members donated about 50 blankets and a poker table to the Sims Veteran's Home in Springfield Wednesday morning.
They also toured the facility and met several residents. The residents at the state-run veteran's home sign over their benefits to the home to pay for the services.
They receive $35 month spending money, plus any personal savings they may have acquired. In return they receive healthcare and personal services at the facility.
Ken McGartim, the president of the Panama City Beach Rotary Club, says they are ready to become regular visitors at Sims.
"These people stood the lines for us in World War I, World War II, Korea and so on, Vietnam, certainly, and it's up to us now to take care of these folks and the government can only do so much."
Kayla Hammock, a student at Arnold High School, wants to return as well and get to know some of the veterans.
"It was awesome. This was something I'd want to come back many times and go volunteer."
Sims home staff members say they always need volunteers to spend time with the residents. For more information, call 747-5401.
