This year a new Florida law went into effect requiring all public school classrooms to fly an American flag.
That might not seem like that hard of a task, but the cost of those flags adds up. That's why Amvets Post 231 raised enough money to buy 50 flags for some area elementary schools.
This week, members of the post delivered the flags to Waller Elementary School in Youngstown and Cottondale School in Jackson County.
Roy Cooke is a member of the local Amvets and says, “Our state commander contacted us saying the Legislature had passed a new law requiring Florida schools to have an American flag in each classroom, so we got on board and contacted two schools and raised the money to buy flags for each classroom.”
Under the new Florida law each classroom must half a flag. Every flag must be no smaller than two feet by three feet. The American flags must be in all classrooms in public schools, kindergarten through college.
