Gulf Pines Hospital reopened its emergency room just eight days ago and workers have already treated 39 people. That may not sound like much, but hospital officials say they're receiving nothing but "thank yous" from the community.
The ER in Port St. Joe means patients don't have to drive to Bay County for emergency medical care.
Liz Register, the new hospital administrator, says a working ER is vital to any community.
"A couple of these cases, people would not have made it to Panama City if we had not been here. It was just a miracle for one person, as far as I'm concerned, that we were here and were able to take care of them."
The hospital's next goal is to achieve critical access status with the state next.
