62 years later and they're still in love

Panama City - After 62 years of marriage, one local couple renewed their vows Sunday in front of friends and family.

Richard and Ruth McLaughlin were married on Valentines Day 62 years ago. Richard was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease three years ago. A few months ago, Richard asked his wife to marry him again.

"He said, 'I have something to ask you' and I said, 'what?' And he said 'Will you marry me?’ I sort of laughed, and he said ‘No, I mean it.’ He said, ‘I think we need to say our vows over again,’ and he's pursued it," said Ruth McLaughlin.

The couple thought Richard’s declining health might keep them from revisiting the alter, but Ruth says thanks to a lot of prayers and their family's support, she was able to walk down the aisle for a second time this Sunday.

"I just kept the faith everyday that everything was going to be okay, and he did, he kept saying his exact words were 'We're going to get married on Sunday come hell or high water.'"

Ruth says the biggest difference from her wedding 62 years ago is what the marriage means to her now.

"It’s a different thing, because you're young and you have your life to look forward to, and this is sort of the icing on the cake so to speak. A special time."

Richard was recently moved into Sims Veteran Center, where the couple re-married Sunday afternoon.

I am so glad WJHG shared your story-you just don't hear about this type of story so much on TV anymore! Usually it is the opposite of this example. What a blessing to be happily married for 62 years!! I have been married for 21 years to the love of my life and I pray that one day, we will be able to see 62 years together! God Bless You Both!
