Pieces of History

Near the Indianola Mound in Fort Walton Beach, archeologists have found several refuse or trash pits containing numerous ancient artifacts like ceramics and animal bones.

So far archaeologists believe that the artifacts come from a culture dating back to 400 BC to 500 BC.

It may soon be hard to study the findings since no museum has stepped up to take the artifacts. The artifacts could wind up with the state or the landowners themselves. The land is privately owned which means a planned condo development will continue.

However, developers say they will preserve the Indianola Mound and parts of the site not affected by construction.
