A Solution for Worn-Out Blue Roofs

A billboard company is offering to let homeowners use old signs to cover roofs still leaking from summer hurricanes.

The blue plastic government tarps covering many Florida homes since the four hurricanes hit are leaking from age, worn out by wind and exposure to the sun.

Federal officials have said they have no more to give out, leaving many low-income homeowners to plead with United Way and other organizations for help as they wait for repairs.

Lamar Outdoor Advertising is offering to donate vinyl strips from about 900 discontinued billboards and says it can get thousands more if needed.

The billboard vinyl is a thicker, heavy-duty polyvinylchloride that can take the weather's abuse day in and day out.

Homeowners can put the advertisements face up or face down.
