A Deerpoint woman died Monday afternoon when her husband accidentally hit her in the couple's driveway. It happened just before noon Monday at their home on Resota Lane.
State troopers say 80-year-old David Evans waited in the van while his wife, Marcelle, unlocked the gate to their driveway. Evans' wife walked in front of the van to the gate to the road.
Ruth Sasser with the Bay County Sheriff's Office says something caused the van to go forward.
"At that point there was a mechanical malfunction. The accelerator stuck and the husband, who was driving, tried desperately to avoid hitting his wife and swerved very strongly to the left."
The Highway Patrol is handling the investigation, and according to investigators, the cause of the acceleration is unknown. Troopers say charges are pending the results of the investigation.
