Today at Hurlburt Field the NEA held a writing workshop to help servicemen and women share their wartime experiences.
Officials say it’s a way of preserving our history from those who have lived it.
Famous writers like Tom Clancy, Tobias Wolff, and James McBride have led similar workshops all over the country.
Military personnel say it’s important to show all aspects of their time spent overseas.
“We had a lot of experiences vaccinating children, building schools and no one even knows about these things. So I thought it was important to write these things down and say, "Hey we're doing this."
The NEA is asking for writing submissions from military personnel who have served after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
