Monday, Dep. Artie Rodriguez received the Legion of Honor, a Purple Heart for law enforcement officers.

Mike Burns from the Florida attorney general's office was also on hand to make the presentation.

Back in 2002, Rodriguez was responding to a call near Sandestin when a drunk driver slammed into his cruiser. He was pinned inside for nearly 40 minutes and suffered severe back injuries.

Statistics show that automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for law enforcement officers.

Artie Rodriguez says, ‘It's a major concern, especially for law enforcement. You might go to work in the morning or at night, but some of them never make it home.”

Rodriguez is back on the force working as a resource officer at Walton Academy School.
