Front Beach and Thomas Drive Construction Continues

Panama City - Road work on the Thomas Drive project continues this week after a break during spring break. Panama City Beach officials say the work needs to be completed in one month or the contractor could face some big fines.

According to the project manage, there is no reason to believe those fines will be necessary as crews are already putting on the final touches to the project. A large portion of the project is geared toward pedestrians. The new project has 8 ft. wide sidewalks on both sides of the road, bike paths and a trolley lane.

Construction slowed during spring break because the city asked the contractor to hold off on road work during that time. But the CRA manager says crews were still working planting hundreds of trees and widening sidewalks on Front Beach rd.

The project is scheduled to be done in one month. If not, the contractor could be fined $3 thousand a day, each day it is late.

Done one month from when? What kind of reporting is this? Give us the exact date please of when this boondoggle is supposed to be finished. Secondly, 8' wide sidewalks? I don't think so. I have a sidewalk that was just laid down directly in front of my business. It sure isn't 8' in width. They must be counting the bike/tram lane as well as the normal sidewalk width. BTW, this project was supposed to to be completed October of 2011. I guess a six month delay is appropriate for a government project.

I work on the beach and the only improvement I see is front beach where it is 2 lanes coming east in front of mcdonalds. If you are claustrophobic don't go down thomas drive by boardwalk. Way to much landscaping that could of been a 4 lane rd. Very poor designing. We need lanes not beauty. Spring break was still a night mare so that is a lot of wasted money.
