Spring Break Viral Videos Send Different Message

Panama City - Tourism Development officials put a lot of thought into how to promote Panama City Beach for Spring Break. But no matter what approach they take, there is another media outlet reaching hundreds of thousands of people with a different message.

Youtube videos have hundreds of thousands of hits and show a different message than tourism officials would like to portray.

"Individual properties advertise for what they want in their businesses...they should police, clean up and as long as it doesn't spill out onto the street and bay county have to pay for it," County Commissioner Mike Thomas said.

He says these videos are not accurate. County officials say most people here on Spring Break are responsible, but that is not what makes a good Youtube video.

"If you slip and fall and halfway down you tear your shirt off, if they're filming that whole thing they're going to show the part of you laying there with your shirt off on the ground next to the beer can laying there," Thomas said.

The TDC hopes to respond to this, as well as other spring break issues with the help of a task force that Panama City Beach officials plan on creating at the May 16th city council meeting.

Here is a bold ides, lets eliminate the TDC for one year and see if the bed tax numbers match up compared to a year when we had a TDC.My guess is there would be no difference in the numbers.

Mike Thomas WHO are you trying to kid, This has gone on for years and you, TDC, Police and others have turned your backs on this and the locals just for the all mighty dollar. Spring break and Thunder beach has become an eyesore for us. Drunk teens , speeding car's and Bikes, trashed yards and streets. People have NO respect anymore. Get real and the media should wake up and start showing what's going on. Don't wait a month after it is over.

Wow... must be a slow news day. "OH NO! YouTube is destroying the upstanding reputation we have as a major spring break destination!" Doubt it.

This is a poorly written article. I am disappointed. ""Individual properties advertise for what they want in their businesses...they should police, clean up and as long as it doesn't spill out onto the street and bay county have to pay for it," County Commissioner Mike Thomas said." That sentence doesn't make any sense. What are you trying to say here? I wish this was more clearly written and more information was included in the article.

How can you put down the spring breakers when Fireman and cops from all over came here for Bike week and did what they did. I like both to have freedon but Justice does not to be equal!

U keep doing double/triple talk! U want the tax revenues, $'s spent to keep, help businesses & jobs Spring Break, Thunder Beach, long term winter vacationers as well as summer vacationers bring to us; why don't U close all restaurants/lounges, condos/hotels ALL businesses-than maybe y'll will be happy. Advertise the dirty beaches-no place to stay, eat or do anything. Just look @ the Gulf.

This is nothing new, just go www.tripadvisor.com and do a search of PCB. Then read the reviews on the local condos and hotels. You will very quickly see that the main complaint is spring break, followed by the lack of feeling safe here during spring break.
