One Dead after Plane Crash in DeFuniak Springs

The pilot of a small experimental plane dies after the aircraft crashes late Wednesday morning at the DeFuniak Springs airport.

Authorities confirm the pilot, 77 year old Pablino Gutierrez of Fort Walton Beach, was killed in the crash. He was the only one on board the plane, a Hummel Bird..

Witnesses say the crash happened about 11:15 Wednesday morning shortly after the plane took off from the west end of the runway at the small airport.

The plane began to gain altitude before suddenly plunging nose down into the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are on their way to the site to investigate the cause of the crash.
