A local woman gets a wonderful Valentines gift today, a beautiful baby boy. However as soon as he was born the baby was wisked off to surgery to save his life.
He was born with his intestines and other internal organs outside his body. So doctors did life saving surgery at Gulf Coast Medical Center
Pediatric surgeon Dr. Michael Taylor was ready and waiting to get to work as soon as this little guy came into the world. This tiny bundle was born at gulf coast with a very rare condition called gastroschisis.
It's a type of hernia that forms in the abdominal wall where internal organs can push through. The only treatment for Gastroschisis is surgery.
Thursday Dr. Taylor made history by performing what is believed to be the very first Gastroskisis surgery in this area. We talked with Dr. Taylor right after the surgery and he says the baby is doing great.
“The baby's health is excellent. The baby is doing well. Immediately upon being delivered it was crying, it was stable from a respiratory standpoint. The defect was a significant one but on the scale of Gastroskisis it was a fairly minimal size defect and not a lot of bowel exposed.
We'll check up on the little guy to see how he and mom and fairing in a few days.

My 26 year old daughter had surgery to repair scar tissue from having had gastroskisis at birth. Full term baby and when born hospital/docs. did a wonderful job with her - wisking her away to Denver Children's Hospital. Her intestines were completely outside of her stomach. Dr. Bailey put the intestines in place and she had a 3 week stay in ICU and 2 more in another room. 4 months later, after the swelling subsided- Dr. Bailey opened her and "put things in proper (1 week in hosp). My point is, during the last several years she has had horrible pains that no one could explain - Until her ER visit two days ago, less than 24 hrs. later, surgery was done - very complicated, intestines everywhere, lots of scaring, appendix high on the right. Be aware of future complications - pain from scaring. Get faster help. My daughter will be FINE, I am sure - all her life she never skipped a beat walking, talking on time. Gymnastics, golf, piano and she has a 6 years old son

A friends mother was born tha way back in about 1920. They figured she'd die so they just crammed everything back inside and sewed it closed. Four kids later all adults now, the doctors told her she had masive cancer. Finnally someone remember her birth. Every piece of cancer was just an organ in the wong place. NO cancer.
