Legislature Sets Aside $3.5 Million for New Panama City Library

There have been some unresolved issues surrounding building a new Bay County Public Library or remodeling the existing one. It looks like State Rep. Allan Bense may have solved the problems.

The House speaker was able to appropriate $2.5 million in the new state budget to build a new library or renovate the existing one, and the county could get another $1 million in grants for the project

The present library has a number of problems, including a very leaky flat roof.

Rep. Bense says $3.5 million is plenty to build a nice, large, functional library. He says at $100 a square foot Bay County could build a very nice 35,000 square foot facility, which would be more than adequate.

Bense stipulated he wants independent oversight on how the money is spent and he hinted in a local radio interview on WKGC-FM that he wasn’t happy with the library leadership.

There is a possibility the Bay County Library could loose the money if Gov. Jeb Bush uses his line item veto powers and cuts it from the budget.
