The race for Holmes County sheriff from 2000 could finally be coming to a close.
In the election John Braxton lost to Dennis Lee by five votes.
The whole thing wound up in court, where Lee would ultimately prevail and hold on to the job. The whole matter has been in court one way or another for almost five years.
When it was all over Braxton had been seeking to have the state pay his attorney fees, but a lower court ruled against him, saying he was responsible for his own fees. He appealed that ruling.
Wednesday, the First District Court of Appeals upheld the lower court's ruling, saying Braxton hadn't filed his "attorney’s fees claim" within a 30-day window as provided by state law.
