Man Dies After Being Struck by Lightning on Navarre Beach

A Louisiana man who decided to ride out a thunderstorm on a Florida Panhandle beach died after being struck by lightning Wednesday.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office says the man was visiting friends. His identity and age weren't immediately known.

The man was on Navarre Beach with an 11-year-old boy when he was hit by the bolt at about 5:40 Wednesday.

The child was slightly injured. He was treated at the scene and then released.

National Weather Service meteorologist Gary Beeler says the beach is the most dangerous place to be during a lightning storm. Humans are usually the tallest object between the water and any beachfront development.

Beeler says the best thing to do if caught in a thunderstorm at the beach is to get into a car.
