Tate's Hell State Forest to Be Opened to ATVs

Parts of Tate's Hell State Forest near Tallahassee will soon be open to all-terrain vehicles and off-road motorcycles.

State forestry officials are preparing to open 150 miles of trails in the forest.

While it's good news for people looking for places to go off-roading in a growing area, it's a concern to some environmentalists. Some of them fear that people will drive off of the designated trails and hurt the forest or wildlife.

Others approve though. The Nature Conservancy supports the trails to prevent riders from damaging the rest of the forest.

Jeeps and other ordinary four-wheel drive trucks and vehicles won't be allowed on the trails.

The trails are old logging roads in the forest, which is between Apalachicola and Tallahassee on the Florida Panhandle.
