Major Area Highway Reopens

It’s been a month since Hurricane Dennis washed out a section of Highway 98 between Ft. Walton Beach and Destin.

All four lanes of the divided highway have now been reopened.

Originally, a temporary lane in each direction was opened a few days after Hurricane Dennis struck on July 10, but the other two lanes didn’t open until now and all four are back to original design specs.

The repairs and rebuilding cost over $3 million.

Hurricane Ivan last year and Hurricane Opal in 1995 washed out the same four lane stretch of the major highway on the east end of Santa Rosa Island.

The storms all flattered sand dunes on the narrow barrier island.

The Florida Department of Transportation may install some type of berm system that would keep the storm surge from washing under the highway pavement.

The DOT is seeking federal funding help on the project.
