More Than 50,000 Restored on First Day

On the first full day after Hurricane Dennis, Gulf Power has restored power to more than 50,000 of the 242,000 customers who lost electricity following the storm’s landfall.

“Our crews have made great progress, although there’s still a daunting task ahead,” said John Hutchinson, Gulf Power spokesman. “There is quite a bit of damage in several areas, but we have plenty of outside help and expect to continue the great work as long as the weather holds out.”

The company estimates that power will be restored to 95 percent of the customers who can take power within a week, weather permitting. The estimate excludes Santa Rosa Island.

Gulf Power has more than 3,400 outside workers from utilities around the Southeast assisting in the restoration effort.

“We concentrated on our infrastructure on Monday, getting 27 of the 47 substations that were knocked out back online,” Hutchinson said, “and more than half of our transmission lines that were out are back in service. These large lines must be repaired before we can begin work in the neighborhoods.”

Power restoration has been completed in Holmes, Jackson and Washington counties. Any customers who are without power by noon today in those three counties only should call 1-800-GU-POWER.

“It’s still important for everyone to be patient,” Hutchinson said. “Many folks are saying this is not as bad as Ivan, and for most areas it is not, but in many areas like Milton, Navarre, Midway, Pace and Century, it is as bad and it is going to take time to get everything back up and running. We ask for everyone’s support and patience as we work as fast as we can.”
