Storm Is a Lightning Event

The strong thunderstorms which passed through Bay County Monday morning created several lightning strike problems.

One strike occurred at Lucille Moore Elementary School in St. Andrew. The strike, which hit a utility pole outside the school, caused some excited. Panama City firefighters responded and determined everything was under control.

A few minutes later, there was a frightening situation for a Lynn Haven family on Huntington Ridge Road.

Homeowner Bernadine Reams says she heard a loud explosion around 9 a.m. Monday morning. She looked outside and saw flames shooting up out of the ground about 12 feet into the air.

Apparently, lightning struck a flagpole, ran through four feet of concrete and ruptured a buried natural gas line.

It burned over an hour before TECO Gas crews could shut off the gas.

No one was hurt. TECO crews say the occurrence was about a one in a million chance of happening.
