Authorities say they have arrested a Santa Rosa County woman suspected of neglecting a 4-year-old to the point he almost died.

Deputies arrested 19-year-old Erin Brittany Markes over the weekend. She's identified as the boy's caregiver.

Investigators say Markes deprived the boy of food and did not give him prescribed medication for seizures.

When he was hospitalized earlier this month, the boy weighed just 10 pounds. Fortunately, his condition is reportedly improving.

Markes is in the Santa Rosa County jail in Milton, facing a felony child neglect charge.

this child has a rare disease. a 19 year old uneducated mother needs the guidance of a good pediatrician. clearly the child did not receive appropriate medical care. Instead of providing this mother with support, we are punishing her. Typical of a society that lacks education or compassion. Her pediatricians should go to jail for operating without proper education.

This is just another example of babies having babies. My question is where was the community and her family during this whole ordeal? The step-father claims the mother just needs some parenting-education. That education should of come from her family, friends. It takes a whole village to raise a child. I don't just blame the young mother, I blame society and family values. Instead of running to the phone everytime you see something you don't agree with and waiting for the state to take care of it..why not simply ask or befriend someone you think needs help. We need to start becoming a community and helping one another out.
