Bay County commissioners approved a hotly-contested condo project on the west end of the Panama City Beach Tuesday night.
By a unanimous vote, commissioners agreed with the planning board and its decision to grant a development order for the Mayan Resort project.
The 279-unit, 20-story condo will be located at the corner of Front Beach Road and Malaga Street, once home to the Blue Dolphin Resort destroyed by Hurricane Ivan last year.
During the seven-hour hearing, members of the West Beach Defense Fund and Stop High Rises Inc. tried to prove the Mayan Resort would put a strain on the resources in the area and is not consistent with the county development plan. Commissioners disagreed.
