It now appears that a suspicious device found behind a south Walton supermarket was part of some kind of hoax.
Around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon someone found a pipe bomb device in back of the Publix Supermarket on state road 395 near the Watercolors community.
It was strategically placed on the main water line next to the natural gas line.
Walton County sheriff’s deputies sealed off Highway 395 in front of the store and then evacuated the building and surrounding businesses.
South Walton firefighters, ATF agents, Homeland Security and the state fire marshal’s office joined deputies at the scene.
They sent in a bomb disposal robot three times. During the last mission around 7:30 Wednesday evening they determined there were no explosives.
This kind of incident, in an exclusive resort area, shook some people and caused others to speculate.
The area was reopened to the public over five hours after it had been closed. Authorities are still trying to find out who planted the device and why.
