Monday morning over 80 National Guard troops from the 124th Infantry in Panama City left for southern Mississippi.

A company from Bonifay and Chipley left Sunday morning. They're all part of a Florida-based disaster relief task force.

Military officials expect to have over 21,000 National Guard soldiers from 35 states in the disaster areas by Sunday.

Troops say their job will be to keep the peace.

Jeff Delmar of the 124th Infantry says, "I'm tryin’ to stay out there and keep people safe, be a good positive forceful presence and just be able to make people out there. Feel a little better about being able to get out there and get their home back to normal and everything without any fear of anybody coming around and doing anything to them."

Troops say they could be gone for weeks to months.
