DeFuniak Springs city officials are narrowing the search for a new police chief. The city commission had cut the list of applicants from seven down to three finalists.
The three are interim chief Dennis Ward, Michael Atkinson, Jr. from Tallahassee and Cliff Bell of DeFuniak Springs.
One of the three will be selected to replace Ray Burgess who resigned the chief's job after he was charged with a misdemeanor about two months ago. He pled no contest to falsifying records of a job applicant.
City officials will interview the final three candidates Monday night and then select a new Police Chief the following day.
The DeFuniak Springs police chief, officially known as the city marshal, is an elected position in the town. Marianna is the only other city in Florida which elects its police chief.
