It’s the perfect place for a leisurely scenic stroll. The quarter mile trail at Apalachicola’s Nature Center carries you over the Apalachicola River's flood plain.

"There are all sorts of interesting plants and animals to see along the trail," said Education Specialist Alan Knothe.

We didn't see any while we were walking, but they're certainly out there.

"Some of the animals people typically see are all kinds of birds, bard owls, turtles, box turtles," said Knothe.

The trail ends at the river's delta. It’s a view you don't want to miss, and once you've finished walking, there's still plenty to do off the trail.

"Right here at the reserve we have a nice nature center that you can visit with all shorts of education displays. In a separate building we have an aquarium exhibit with live fish and turtles and other animals," said Knothe.

Apalachicola's Nature Center Trail is one of the Panhandle's hidden treasures.

The Nature Center is located at the far north end of Market Street in Apalachicola. It’s open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. It is free to enter.

Once in Apalachicola, drive north on Market Street past the yellow blinking light to the end. Turn left and go through the entry gate to the first building on the left. You can call the Nature Center at (850) 653-8063.
