Roads Won't Be Closed in Southwestern Washington County

It looks like some citizens’ road riff with the Washington County Commission is coming to an end.

A property owner in the New Hope area had filed a lawsuit against the county for not stopping illegal dumping on some of the roads that run through his land. The county is responsible for maintaining the roads.

Commissioners at a recent meeting said they planned to close the roads to avoid a lawsuit.

When residents in the affect area complained, the commissioners went back to the drawing board. They now have apparently settled the pending lawsuit with the landowner, Northern Trust.

Northern Trust will get $10,000 and will quit claim deed 15 of the 17 miles of roads.
North Henry Lane will be closed on one end. Rocky landing, which leads to a river, will continue to be owned by Northern Trust and the county will stop maintaining them.

Peter Herbert, Washington County Administrator, says both sides have agreed that all the roads being deeded to the county will have 40-foot rights of way with engineers setting the center line with GPS surveys.
