Bed Tax May Soon Rise in Bay County

Additional parking, sporting complexes, promotional and operational help are all things of these things could be possible if Bay County were to pass a one percent increase in the bed tax.

Each dollar may not make a dent in one person's wallet, but it could add up to millions of dollars for the area. So why are so many local hotel owners against it?

If the tax were approved, Khan says he'd rather see the extra money go to beach renourishment rather than advertising, a convention center or something of that nature.

Other smaller hotels say the increase wouldn't matter to them anyway. This issue will be discussed in upcoming meetings. If it is passed, it could start as early as January.

In the meantime, the three percent bed tax lies. If the TDC were to approve the one percent bed tax hike, county commissioners would have to approve the increase.
