WeWa Balks at Hospital Tax

Earlier this month, Gulf County commissioners passed a half-cent sales tax to raise money for a new hospital in Port. St. Joe.

But now the city of Wewahitchka says it's not going to pay it.

Wewahitchka Mayor Ray Dickens says the new proposed hospital in Port Saint Joe is too far away. The mayor asks, what’s the benefit for Wewa?

“I just don't think it's fair to our people up here to foot a bill that they're not going to benefit from it."

He says people in Wewahitchka wouldn't use it because Bay County Medical Center would still be the closest hospital.

Mayor Dickens says he’ll call a special meeting on the issue at City Hall later this week.
